A leading hospital in Zurich is looking for a Clinical Terminology Expert.
Clinical Terminology Expert (also Clinical Terminologist or Ontologist in healthcare ).
In medical informatics, this role occupies a key position at the interface between IT, medicine and data management.
Main tasks & responsibilities
- Semantic interoperability: Ensuring that medical data from different systems (e.g., laboratory, nursing, diagnosis) speak the same language and can be exchanged without loss of meaning.
- Standards & Nomenclatures: Selecting and maintaining international standards for various medical fields:
- SNOMED CT: Universal Clinical Terms (Symptoms, Procedures, Anatomy)
- LOINC: Laboratory values and diagnostic measurements
- ICD-O: Oncological diagnoses and histology
- ATC: Classification of drugs and active ingredients
- Value Sets & Concept Maps: Creating specific lists of terms for particular use cases (Value Sets) and translation rules between different systems or legacy data (Concept Maps).
- Terminology Service (USZ): Development of the central server infrastructure at the Hospital to automatically make these term catalogs available to all hospital systems (e.g. in the HIS/Clinical Information System or for the HISIM/EHR).

- At a university hospital like the USZ, this profile is essential for data-driven research (e.g. within the framework of SPHN – Swiss Personalized Health Network), for the introduction of HL7 FHIR and for the secondary use of clinical data.
Job requirements & qualifications
- Education: Studies in Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, Health Data Science or a medical/natural science degree with a strong IT focus.
- Expertise: Deep understanding of medical documentation, nomenclatures (SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD-10/ICD-O, ATC) as well as logical knowledge representation and ontologies (OWL, RDF, Description Logics).
- fluent in german
We are essentially looking for a data expert with healthcare experience who understands clinical terminologies and can assess which terminology is most appropriate for which use case , rather than simply someone familiar with the terminology standards.
